“Why do we exist? Honestly? Because travel Planning has become a pain in the a***”

Founder and Lead Editor, Phil Brown

Cairn & Cove is your travel filter. From the cairn at top of the mountain to the cove by the sea, we analyse the noise, cut the nonsense and spoon feed you the stuff that’s worth your time.

Why Cairn & Cove?

Picture the scene: you’ve managed to find a week or two off work, you’ve pulled together a budget and now you’re ready for an adventure. But a million and one voices on social media start screaming their opinions, you realise there are 60 hotels to choose from just in the neighbourhood you want to stay in, and if you try and squeeze all of those amazing attractions and experiences in, you’re going to run out of time, energy and money.

We believe modern travel has stopped being relaxing or enlightening and started becoming stressful and frustrating. Even if budget or time isn’t the problem, there’s still a wide gap between trust, reality and the travel agent’s sales pitch.

Add in hours spent researching, more hours spent figuring out if you can trust ChatGPT or booking platform, then plenty of extra stress picking activities, checking visas and insurance and then packing. It can make you wonder why we travel at all!

Get it wrong, and it isn’t just a disappointment: it’s a year’s savings and your precious time up in smoke.

So that’s why Cairn & Cove is worth your time. We are the filter that makes travel fun, interesting and carefree again.

We do the homework for you by taking a deeper dive, wading through the blog posts, Reddit forums, TripAdvisor reviews and YouTube videos to bring you the real story, then summarising and delivering you a verdict you can trust. From long reads to handy tools, like our packing list generator, to our fortnightly newsletter, you’ll get guidebook quality information, in a digestible editorial format, without spending a penny.

Unlike other travel writing, which can just be a glorified sales pitch, we cut out the superlatives and deliver the honest picture. We’re all about the insights, the real story and the places actually worth seeing, rather than what earns us the most commission.

So if you’re tired of trawling forums, spending hours reading guidebooks or wondering who to trust online, you’ve come to the right place.

Our Approach

Facts, Not Opinions

You’ll notice straight away we aren’t travel bloggers or influencers desperate to tell you incredible our trip was. Instead, we focus on what’s actually helpful, digging through the forums and guidebooks, or interviewing the local tour guide, to tell the real story – not the one story that benefits the person telling it.

A Deeper Dive

We write long-form editorial features, not listicles designed to hold your attention for 30 seconds or to satisfy a Google keyword. Our articles are structured around an insight or narrative, with the goal of leaving you more informed and more curious than when you started reading.

Unbiased Coverage

We do not accept payment in exchange for positive coverage. We recommend things because they belong in the story, not because they pay us to be there. We are committed to 100% transparency when it comes to our commercial activity, and we disclose any partnerships or sponsorship at all times.

Our Story

Cairn & Cove was founded in 2025 by Phil Brown, a writer and digital marketer who has spent time in over 40 countries and significantly more time reading about the ones he hasn't reached yet.

Cairn & Cove grew out of a handful of simple frustrations. Too much of what's published is thin, derivative, or built to serve an algorithm rather than a reader. The focus is firmly on selling a tour, hotel room or experience, rather than letting the audience choose what suits them. AI slop is dominating the space, leaving visitors wondering if anything they read is true.

Cairn & Cove is an attempt to close that gap with editorial work that treats the reader's time and intelligence with respect. With travel becoming an ever more scarce commodity, and the noise surrounding it getting louder every day, Cairn & Cove is the trusted voice and the filter you can always come back to.

We work with travel writers from all walks of life, and every corner of the globe, to bring you high quality travel writing that matches our vision.

Any content produced is extremely well-researched, backed up by reputable sources and focused on facts, not opinions. We use an intensive fact-checking system and a research method that isn’t reliant on a Reddit post, and we’ll hold our hands up and change things if we’ve got it wrong.

We believe real travel happens when you figure a place out for yourself; we’re just here to tell you where and what those places are.

Our Values

Revelation

We want out readers to discover their own adventure, sharing the lesser-knowns and alternative viewpoints.

Liberation

We want to help travellers to break free from the brochures and noise, questioning travel norms, trends and behaviours and gaining the real picture.

Kinship

We write for ourselves as much as we write for our readers. And we want to ensure our trip has a positive impact on the people at our destination.

Utility

We want our readers to get serious value from our brand, via useful and helpful writing, handy tools and tips and insights that can transform the whole trip.

Our Coverage

Our editorial focus is destinations and experiences that deserve a closer look. Rather than jumping on trends or creating yet another ‘best places’ listicle, we focus on uncovering the incredible, offering the alternative, or really questioning whether Venice in August is a good idea.

We tend to stay away from the beaten path, but that doesn’t mean Times Square or the Eiffel Tower are off limits. We just look from a different angle, avoiding the surface and not just repeating what others have already said.

We aren’t limited to certain destinations, but we’ll be brutally honest if places are hard to reach or come with limits, risks or real dangers.

We do not rank hotels by star rating or tell you where to get the best Instagram shot. We are not a booking platform, a deals site, or a travel blog. We are a publication, and our overall mission is to make you want to go somewhere you hadn't considered, or to see a place you thought you knew in a completely different light.

You can see a more detailed overview of our writing approach in our editorial policy.

Cairn & Cove FAQs

  • Sure, but only to organise calendars, structure research and plan our lives! Cairn & Cove is a for humans by humans organisations, and we will never publish articles written entirely by AI.

Each article or piece of content we produce has a human writer behind it, and you’ll be able to see exactly who that is at the top of the page – no AI slop here, ever.

  • Feel free to pitch your article or idea, and we’ll be in touch if we like the sound of it. Visit our write for us page to get started.

  • Possibly, but not always. Cairn & Cove isn’t about personal experience or recommendations. We focus on fact-led research, doing the deep-dive for our readers, rather than just telling it how we saw it.

We may have visited the place featured, but for us, that isn’t as important as sifting through dozens of articles, experiences and opinions to help our readers draw their own conclusions.

  • They don’t. We may work with tourism boards or commercial organisations to cover their destination, product or service, but we will always take a completely unbiased approach to our coverage, regardless of remuneration or treatment.

  • No, we do not currently offer travel booking or manage any of the tours, activities, trips or services we cover or recommend.

A Small Ask…

As an independent travel publisher that exists in the age of AI, we’re not joking when we say everything rides on our brand being seen. If you found anything you’ve read to be useful, or you just enjoyed reading about somewhere new, then please share our website with a friend, post something on your social media profile or just subscribe to our newsletter, channels or other communications. It seriously helps us, and doesn’t cost a thing! So thank you in advance.
