Write For Cairn & Cove
Pitch your idea or story and get featured on our website, in our newsletter or in the upcoming magazine
If you’re an exceptional travel writer, or think the story you have to share is unmissable, then we’re potentially interested in hear and publishing it.
To ensure our content has broad views, niche and off-the-beaten track narratives, interesting stories (with a point and insights) or something burning about a particular destination, we provide an open pitching opportunity, using the form below. We want to hear from people of all backgrounds, beliefs and
But before you crack on and start filling everything out, here’s our rules and guidelines for aspiring writers, which you absolutely have to read before you submit anything! It’s also a very good idea to read at least a handful of our current articles, so you can get a feel of what we are trying to achieve, and what we do and don’t have on the site.
There’s also a hand slider so you can get an idea of hour active we are in terms of accepting pitches – our content needs reflect our current workload, in-house writing staff and current campaigns, so we may have periods where we need lots of content, or no content at all.
As you can imagine, we can’t respond to every pitch, and we can’t take the time to feed back on every pitch we don’t take forward. But if you don’t hear back, don’t take that as a permnanent ‘no thanks’ – keep pitching, and you might get there eventually!
If we are keen on developing your pitch, then please be aware we have strict guidelines in terms of content, writing style, format and purpose. In return, you’ll get firm deadlines, payment terms (7 days maximum) and excellent communication. The thought of our writers being messed around makes us shiver.
We don’t have fixed rates, but we’ll be honest if we don’t think the rate you propose matches what the market is saying. We’re very good at sniffing out excellent writers from bots / AI spammers, so bear that in mind too.
So, read the rules, prepare your pitch and see you on the other side!
Honest response likelihood
This slider shows you how actively we are currently looking for new content, just so you know what to expect
AI? No thanks
If you’re generating articles or pitches with AI, then either sharing them unedited or lightly edited, we just aren’t interested. Anyone can do that. Originality, human language and a point, reason or angle that AI can’t generate right now needs to be at the heart of your pitch.
Be careful with listicles
Listicles are ubiquitous with travel writing / blogging, and they do serve a purpose. However, our use of listicles is always an extremely deep dive into a niche set of destinations, or a focus on a very specific topic. If you’re thinking of pitching the 10 best beaches on earth, please don’t. If you’re thinking of pitching the 10 best Dive bars in Denver, with photos and a story, we’re keen.
Go beyond the obvious
‘This amazing tower in Paris, France, offers amazing views of the city’ isn’t going to be a good article for us. But if you suddenly reveal you’re actually talking about Tour Montparnasse, then we’re interested.
Writing pitches only
We only want to see a couple of paragraphs about your idea – not full articles. We aren’t currently looking for photographers, web designers, SEO providers, agencies or anything else, so please save your time and our inbox.
English language only
Please don’t share pitches that aren’t in English, or written by someone who isn’t utterly fluent in English. Thanks.
Be realistic with your rate and word count
Bear in mind we have a very good idea of what excellent writing costs, and we’ll be honest if we think you’re coming in too hot, or cold! Underpaying is as bad as overpaying. More words doesn’t always equal more money either!
Topics and coverage
A big yes: hotel reviews, personal experiences, solo travel stories, slow travel stories, insights, the less obvious, complete unknowns, product reviews (with own high quality photos).
A big no: personal opinions pieces, airline seat reviews, short half-life travel news, clickbait with nothing of value behind it, topics that have been done to death everywhere else.
Individuals only
We only work with freelancers who are self-employed, so please don’t pitch us as an agency, organisation, content farm etc.
Please note we won’t respond to any pitches that aren’t related, or are tenuously related to travel (gambling writers, we’re looking at you), pitches that harbour extreme views or are skewed towards political, religious or social beliefs / viewpoints, or anything touches taboo topics like illegal drugs, adult interests and entertainment, so-called crime tourism or poverty safaris, or anything else that clashes with our ethics. See our editorial policy for more information.
