Avani+ Riverside Bangkok Hotel

Go a level above at this luxury Bangkok hotel in the clouds

When Avani opened its Bangkok riverside property in September 2016, it was the brand's first purpose-built hotel anywhere in the world. Every earlier Avani hotel had been a conversion or a sibling extension. But this 26-storey tower on the Chao Phraya was the first designed from the ground up with the brand's intentions baked into the concrete.

The hotel is located in Thonburi, on the quieter western bank, which is an interesting but smart decision. This means you’re pointing right at the busy part of Bangkok’s skyline, so you can look at city rather than be in the middle of it.

This means the property is built entirely around the view. Avani+ Riverside shares a plot with its older sister, Anantara Riverside, and rises deliberately above its roofline. All 250 rooms (including 24 suites) open onto uninterrupted water and skyline from Level 12 upward.

Rooms are done in calm neutrals so you can focus on what’s outside the window. Expect rain showers, Bose speakers, blackout curtains and, in most categories, bathtubs positioned toward the glass.

On floors 26 and 27, SEEN Restaurant & Bar (the Bangkok outpost of Portuguese chef Olivier da Costa's group) shares the roof with an infinity pool that looks across at Wat Arun's spires.

Downstairs, the Grand Riverside Ballroom stretches to 1,152 square metres under an 11-metre ceiling with its own show kitchen, which is why the hotel hosts an outsized share of the city's large events. AVANISPA handles treatments, and the on-site BDMS Wellness Clinic Retreat adds a medical-grade wellness layer most city hotels don't attempt.

The location is the closing argument. Although away from the hustle and bustle, a complimentary shuttle boat runs to Saphan Taksin BTS from 8am until past 11pm so you can stay connected to the action.

You don’t have to wander too far to eat, shop and explore, with Riverside Plaza's 68 outlets sitting practically at the door. The river itself connects you directly to the Grand Palace, Wat Pho and Asiatique, either by water taxi or ferry, meaning you’ll spend less time sat in traffic.
