Capella Singapore

A stunning luxury residence right in the heart of Sentosa

It’s hard to imaging that the British soldiers who once occupied the still-existing colonial bungalows that anchor Capella Singapore would ever have imagined what the grounds would eventually become. This stunning Singapore hotel is certainly a far cry from parading soldiers and World War II battles.

Foster + Partners were brought in to design a resort around those original structures, and the result is something architecturally unusual. The original main building is brought up to speed by two sweeping contemporary wings, sitting within 30 acres of grounds where manicured gardens give way to real tropical rainforest at the edges. Indonesian designer Jaya Ibrahim handled the interiors with considerable restraint, letting the colonial past stay where it is, while adding Asian craft details that feel considered rather than decorative.

Choose from 38 well-appointed garden villas, each with a private plunge pool, or book into the sea-facing suites look directly onto the South China Sea. If that isn’t quite luxurious enough, the restored Colonial Manors come with dedicated butlers, private lap pools, and an itinerary of cultural programming (think Peranakan tile painting, dim sum masterclasses) that makes them feel closer to a private residency than a hotel stay.

Three cascading pools, the acclaimed Auriga Spa (whose treatments follow lunar cycles, using exclusively organic products), and two serious restaurants (Fiamma for Italian, Cassia for modern Cantonese) round out a property that earns its place on the The World's 50 Best Hotels list without needing to shout about it.

Palawan Beach is a few minutes' walk, Universal Studios is 15 minutes on foot, and Singapore's financial district is barely 10 minutes in a taxi. You’ll feel like you’re hidden away in a remote rainforest estate, but secretly you’re in the heart of Singapore’s action.
